Do it like your life depends on it, but don’t do it like your life depends on it

I think if you’re in a position like me, where you have a full time job but you’re trying out something new on the side, that you have to do it like your life depends on it, not like your life depends on it.

First, if you’re doing any creative work, you have to give it your all. You never know where it might lead you, and for many this expression of creativity is what it is to be alive. Do not stop that. Do it like your life depends on it, because it probably does.

Second, don’t count on your creative endeavor for your livelihood, at least not in the initial stages. I think being a full time creator would be great, but for many it’s not realistic. It’s a process that takes time and effort, and relying on income from your creativity too soon could be a recipe for disaster. Best to think of it as a hobby, until you can really be sure.
