Fancy never comes first

One rule of thumb in sport is that you always get your basics right before trying anything fancy. In fact, the teams that win are most often the ones who really get their basics down.

This could be seen as a boring way to go about things, at the start at least. But if you can get your basics down, then you have a license for true expression.

When the basics of both teams are already good, then the fanciness becomes the point of difference. But this is built on the assumption that the basics are there. It doesn’t work any other way.

In other words, practice practice practice until your basics are right. Then, and only then, can you try and go out on a limb.
