The Minimal Obligation
‘Having a unique sound is the minimal obligation.’
Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age (QOTSA)
Having a unique sound is the minimal obligation. It’s the starting point. Then once you have that unique sound, just start pumping things out.
But the thing is, your unique sound comes precisely because you start pumping things out. There’s not two ways about it.
I think of all the music I’ve ever listened to, my favourite band is a toss up between The Beatles and QOTSA. Both for entirely different reasons. The Beatles revolutionised modern music, there’s no other way of putting it. But QOTSA for me is entirely about the sound. I used to listen to Songs For The Deaf on repeat before waterpolo games to get me hyped up, and I remember blasting my favourite QOTSA song Little Sister out of our Ford Telstar’s crummy speakers.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hi, I’m Tim Bunting AKA the Kiwi Yamabushi, a New Zealander who became a Yamabushi Ascetic in the Dewa Sanzan mountains of north Japan. I’m part of the Yamabushido team, and we host life-altering Yamabushi training on the Dewa Sanzan (website link). People come to us for the ultimate mindfulness experience, to reach the next level, or simply connect with nature and themselves.
I’m on a mission to summit all 100 Famous Mountains of Yamagata Prefecture to spread the splendour of this fabulous location, and in dedication to all those who lost their lives out in nature, including my father.
On my daily blog I post thoughts of a practicing Yamabushi that I hope people can use to better themselves and live as fulfilling a life as possible.
