Why you need to make stuff: being a consumer v. a producer

black and red typewriter

Are you a producer or a consumer?

I find if you put more effort into producing things, the way you consume changes.

If you yourself start producing things you start to see things you otherwise wouldn’t. You start to wonder, why did I click on this video but not that one? Why does this writer evoke such emotion? How did they film that? Like you’re trying to uncover other people’s creativity.

When you are a producer, you become much more selective in your consumption. Your consumption has more purpose. The amount you consume lessens because you find yourself wanting to produce more, and when you do consume it’s because you want something to help you produce.

Producing makes you both a more conscious producer, but also a more conscious consumer. Give it a go if you aren’t already.
