Writing

Why write?

Writing is one of the most effective ways to get your ideas across. The main difference between writing and speaking is that with writing you can spend all the time you like changing words to say exactly what you want to say, which is much more difficult to do with speaking.

Writing is a skill and like all skills it can be developed. The best way to develop your writing skill is to write a lot, however there are other tricks that can help improve your writing skill much faster than simply writing a lot. In this course, you will learn skills to help you write an essay in English.

Writing Module One: Gathering ideas

In Writing Module 1.1, we learn about how to use our research results in our writing. Using research in your writing helps to show that you have understood the subject at hand, as well as showing your opinions on it, before you agree with or refute the claims. Then, in Writing Module 1.2 you analyse the topic in question, and gather your ideas to make them easier to write later on.

Writing Module Two: Referencing

In Writing Module 2, we learn how to reference our research. When we use someone else's ideas in our writing, we must give them credit by referencing.

Writing Module Three: Sentence types and draft writing

Writing Module Three is about the sentences that go into different paragraphs, which then make the essay. In Writing Module 3.1, you will learn about topic sentences that set the topic of the paragraph. Writing Module 3.2 is about support sentences that back up your topic sentence. In Writing Module 3.3, you will learn how to write Thesis Statements, an important part of any introduction. Writing Module 3.4 is about the last sentences in a paragraph, concluding sentences, which help to round off your essay. Lastly, we will learn about transition phrases in Writing Module 3.5, which can help make your writing flow, making it much easier for the reader to take in.

Writing Module Four: Editing and final review

Writing Module 4.1 is where we write our drafts before editing and reviewing them in Writing Module 4.2. Once this is done, your essay is finished and it's time to hand it in!
