A Constant State of Uketamo

Acceptance after acceptance

I often get asked if I feel reborn after yamabushi training, and the true answer is, yes, but it depends on the training! Longer ones, almost instantly. Shorter ones, maybe not right away, but certainly over time. And I think this is because Uketamo kind of seeps into your life.

When you live Uketamo, even for a short while, your mind shifts. When something big happens, you almost instantly think ’how can I learn to accept this’. And I think this is a great way to approach life. It’s the unpredictable that makes life hard, but also interesting at the same time. So having some way of dealing with it is a definite bonus.

It’s almost as if the aim is to be in a constant state of acceptance, a constant state of Uketamo, if you will. Master Hoshino says in his book that he believes enlightenment is like a nuclear reaction of realization after realization. I’d like to imagine a nuclear reaction of acceptance after acceptance is also similar. And I believe living Uketamo puts you well on the path towards that state.
