Alternative Routes

Take them. See where they lead you. If they happen to be a shortcut, great, use it in future. If they happen to be a waste of time, even better, you've learned that it's best not to take that route in future.

It might seem like a risk to take alternative routes, but if there is even the slightest chance that it could be better, it's worth taking the risk. Either outcome is useful to you anyway.
