My Family History

Tim Bunting AKA Kiwi Yamabushi on Zao-san

I've started working on a family tree here.

On my Dad’s side, I was able to reliably chase my family back to Eveas and Ann Buntin, born circa 1765 (that’s right, my family name used to be spelled different). On my Mum’s side, I could reliably chase back to Thomas Newell, born in 1700. As such, there is a lot of information to cover. I tried to do that as logically as possible, but as with everything, this is very much a work in progress.

Timothy Sean Gerard Bunting (Me)

I, Timothy Sean Gerard Bunting, was born at Hutt Hospital on August 6, 1988, at 9:31 AM. I moved to Japan in late August 2010. I met my wife, Taeka Itagaki, born October 16, 1984, in Sakata, Yamagata, on December 11, 2010. We got engaged on July 13, 2014, and married on December 11, 2014. We have two daughters: Toa (斗愛) Alison Bunting, born December 13, 2022, and Mana (愛菜) Bunting, born October 1, 2024.

My Parents

My mother is Alison Mary Barry, born February 6, 1960, at Hutt Hospital. My father was Derek Gerard Bunting, born July 13, 1953, in Christchurch, and passed away on April 25, 2016—exactly 100 years after his mother, Molly Bunting, was born.

My dad was one of the best people I have ever known. He passed away while climbing the Paekakariki Escarpment on the day it was opened. He died near the 5-kilometer marker, about halfway through the track.

My Siblings

My brother, John David Bunting, was born on May 26, 1984. He moved to Melbourne, Australia, in 2010. He lives with his wife, Kate, and their sons: Remy Liam Forsyth-Bunting, born July 8, 2015, and Bon Derek Forsyth-Bunting, born April 8, 2021.

My sister, Selina Barbara Russ, was born on July 21, 1986. She lives with her husband, Daniel Russ (Dan), and their daughter, Alexis (Lexi) Ember Russ, born October 15, 2019.

All three siblings were born at Hutt Hospital.

My Paternal Family

My paternal grandparents

My paternal grandfather, Poppa, was Colin Frederick John Bunting, born on 17 October 1913 and passed away on April 22, 2003.

My paternal grandmother, Nana Molly, was Marjorie Josephine Bunting (née O’Boyle), born in 1916 and passed away on December 12, 1996. They are both buried at Ruru Lawn Cemetery in Christchurch. Poppa’s Cenotaph Record can be found here.

My father’s siblings

  • Colin: Lives in Lincoln near Christchurch with his wife Carol. Their children are Mary-Therese, Joseph Peter, Kathryn Anne, and Rachel Sarah Ngaire (Rara).
  • Christopher (Chris): Lives in Timaru with his wife Christine (Tine). Their children are Amy and Emma.
  • Russell Francis: Passed away at the age of two and is buried next to my grandparents in Christchurch.

My paternal great-grandparents (3 generations before me)

My paternal grandfather’s father, my great-grandfather, Poppa’s Dad, was John Thomas Bunting (b. 1880 in Waikari, Hurunui District, Canterbury, New Zealand, d. 25 November 1950, in Hanmer Springs, Hurunui District, Canterbury New Zealand (also found here).

My uncle Chris said John Thomas was a shepherd who would have climbed all of the mountains in that area.

My paternal grandfather’s mother, my great-grandmother, Poppa’s Mum, was Rose Caroline Bunting (Bowes) (b. 1 December, 1882 in Whanganui, New Zealand, d. 6 June, 1972 in Christchurch).

Rose Caroline was a lovely person by all accounts.

Both of my paternal grandfather’s parents are buried at Ruru Lawn Cemetery near my grandparents.

My paternal grandmother’s father, my great-grandfather, Nana Molly’s Dad, was Ignatius Neil O’Boyle (b. 1 February 1878 in Selwyn, Canterbury, New Zealand, d. 22 May, 1937, in New Brighton, Canterbury, New Zealand (also here).

Dad mentioned that O’Boyle in Gaelic is Beal ‘Kings of Ireland’, and that they came from Scotland during Reformation.

My paternal grandmother’s mother, my great-grandmother, Nana Molly’s Mum, was Alice Cecilia O’Boyle (Vincent) (b. in Christchurch on 6 August, 1881, according to Dad, or July, 1881, according to Findagrave. At the very least, d. 2 Jun, 1960, in Saint Albans, Christchurch City, Canterbury, New Zealand).

My Nana Molly’s parents were married on 24th April, 1905, at St. Patrick’s Basilica, Dunedin. Both are buried at Ellesmere Catholic Cemetery, Leeston, Selwyn District, Canterbury, New Zealand.

My paternal great-grandparents’ children

Poppa was one of 7 boys, although one died as an infant, making Poppa the eldest. The children were:

My paternal great-great-grandparents (4 generations before me)

My paternal grandfather’s paternal grandfather, my great-great-grandfather, Poppa’s paternal grandfather, was Thomas Bunting(b. 1854 in Down, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, d. September 16, 1881 in New Zealand, buried at Balcairn cemetery in Leithfield). Thomas is mentioned here alongside his father Allan, his mother Margaret (see below), and his siblings. Thomas moved with his family to New Zealand on The British Empire ship in 1864.

My paternal grandfather’s paternal grandmother, my great-great-grandmother, Poppa’s paternal grandmother, was Eliza Jane Costello (Dalzell) (b. December 17, 1858 in Belfast, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, bpt. Cathedral of St. Anne, Belfast, December 1858. d. June 30, 1922 in Canterbury New Zealand).

Thomas Bunting died young, at the age of 26-27. Eliza Jane had three children with Thomas Bunting, and 9 with William Costello (12 children altogether).

Dad, again:

Thomas and Eliza Jane Dalzell had 3 children, 2 daughters and a son. Eliza Dalzell (1858-1922) was baptised at the Cathedral of St. Anne, Belfast, in December 1858. She is thought to have arrived with her family in 1863. When Thomas died, Eliza married William Costello. I believe Thomas and Eliza lived in North Canterbury. My forebear was their son John.

  • Derek Gerard Bunting.

My paternal grandfather’s maternal grandfather, my great-great-grandfather, Poppa’s maternal grandfather was Walter Frederick Bowes (also here) (b. Ramsgate, Kent, England in 1851, d. 27 Aug 1929 in Auckland, buried in Purewa Cemetery and Crematorium).

My paternal grandfather’s maternal grandmother, my great-great-grandmother, Poppa’s maternal grandmother, was Ellen McElwain (geni.com) (b. 13 October 1857, in Whanganui, New Zealand, bpt. 1 November, 1857 in Whanganui, d. 21 January 1944, in Parnell, Auckland, New Zealand, buried in Meadowbank, Auckland, New Zealand).

Walter and Ellen married in 1877 in New Zealand.

Born in 1829, James A. McElwain came from Ireland to NZ in 1848 to Whanganui. He married English woman Jane Brown. Their daughter Ellen married Walter Frederick Bowes (Rose Bowes' father, Poppa's grandfather).

  • Derek Gerard Bunting.

My paternal grandmother’s paternal grandfather, my great-great-grandfather, Nana Molly’s paternal grandfather, was Patrick O’Boyle (b. 1839 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, d. 19 November 1921 in Leeston, Selwyn District, Canterbury, New Zealand).

Both are buried in Leeston.

My paternal grandmother’s maternal grandfather, my great-great-grandfather, Nana Molly’s maternal grandfather, was Richard Vincent (d. 26 February 1888, apparently from Manchester, England but buried in Rookwood, Cumberland Council, New South Wales, Australia).

My paternal grandmother’s maternal grandmother, my great-great-grandmother, Nana Molly’s maternal grandmother, was Ellen Cullen, from County Kilbane, Ireland. (b. circa 1847, d. 16 November, 1882 in Opawa, Christchurch City, Canterbury, New Zealand, buried in Barbadoes Street Cemetery, Christchurch). (Ellen was apparently 35 when she died meaning she was born circa 1847)

My paternal great-great-great-grandparents (5 generations before me)

My paternal grandfather’s paternal grandfather’s father, my great-great-great-grandfather, Thomas Bunting’s father, was Allan Bunting (Dad had him incorrectly as Allen) (b, 1820, bpt. 5 May, 1820 in Antrim, Antrim, Northern Ireland, UK, d. January 11, 1906 in Sefton, Waimakariri, Canterbury, New Zealand).

Allan and his family emigrated to New Zealand in 1864 onboard The British empire arriving in Lyttelton on 6th September. His name was listed Mr. Allan Bunting, (b. 1824), aged 40, British farm labourer travelling from Gravesend, UK. Records of their sailing can be found and here with their ages listed, with an in-depth article of their sailing here.

Allan is mentioned in this article about the Bunting family, and here (alongside other family members):

b. 5 May 1820, son of John & Jane Buntin (sic -Tim); married Mrs. Margaret Baxter (nee Reilly) 26 Jun 1852 ; a farm labourer aged 40; with his wife Margaret aged 38 & children Sarah aged 13, Thomas aged 10, Jane, 8 John 6, Margaret 5, Mary 2, Fanny an infant, arrived in Lyttelton, New Zealand on board 'British Empire' (2600 tons) 6 Sep 1864; left London 15 May 1864 under Capt Thomas B. Callenan

  • Ros Davies' Co. Down, Northern Ireland Family History Research Site

My paternal grandfather’s paternal grandfather’s mother, my great-great-great-grandmother, Thomas Bunting’s mother, was Margaret A Reilly Bunting (b. 1822, d. 1 Aug, 1902 buried in Balcairn Public Cemetery, Hurunui District, Canterbury, New Zealand).

Allan and Margaret got married on 26 June, 1852.

My paternal grandfather’s paternal grandmother’s father, my great-great-great-grandfather, Eliza Jane Dalzell (Costello)’s father was Thompson Dalzell (b. 1810 in Ireland, d. 1885 in Springfield, Selwyn District, Canterbury, New Zealand, buried in Balcairn, Hurunui District, Canterbury, New Zealand).

My paternal grandfather’s paternal grandmother’s mother, my great-great-great-grandmother, Eliza Jane Dalzell (Costello)’s mother, Thompson Dalzell’s wife, was Susanna Steele (b. 1819 in County Down, Ireland, d. 1899).

According to Dad, my paternal grandfather’s maternal grandfather’s father, my great-great-great-grandfather, Walter Bowes’ father, was Thomas Bowes (also spelt Thomes on Ancestry.com, where he is listed as being born in Ramsgate, Kent, in 1825 and dying in 1893, Dad had him as b. 1824, d. 1893).

Also according to Dad, my paternal grandfather’s maternal grandfather’s mother, my great-great-great-grandmother, Walter Bowes’ mother, was Mary Sarah Miller Nee Bowes (Ancestry.com has her as born 1827 also in Ramsgate, Kent, died 1909, Dad had her as b. 29 November, 1824?).

Thomas and Sarah are mentioned as the parents of Albert Edward Bowes on an interesting page here.

My paternal grandfather’s maternal grandmother’s father, my great-great-great-grandfather, Ellen McElwain’s father, was James Alexander McElwain (geni.com) (b. June 11, 1829 in Mountmellick, County Laois, Ireland, d. 29 May, 1916 in 123 Bell St, Whanganui, Manawatu-Wanganui, New Zealand). (Also on Find-a-grave) and Myheritage.com has him too.

My paternal grandfather’s maternal grandmother’s mother, my great-great-great-grandmother, Ellen McElwain’s mother, was Jane Sarah (Lockwood Brown) McElwain (find-a-grave, Geni.com) (b. About 1836 in Shadwell, Leeds, Yorkshire, England, d. 28 September, 1914 in Whanganui, New Zealand).

James Alexander and Jane Sarah got married in 1855. Both are buried at Heads Road Cemetery, Gonville, Whanganui, New Zealand.

My paternal great-great-great-great-grandparents (6 generations before me)

My paternal grandfather’s paternal grandfather’s paternal grandfather, my great-great-great-great-grandfather, Allan Bunting’s father, was John Bunting (b. December 26, 1790, in Moira, County Down, Ireland, d. 1867 in Kilmore, Lurgan, County Down, Ireland).

Dad had this about the Bunting Family:

Roger Erickson suggested that the original Bunting of Ireland arrived in 1690 with William of Orange. Below, I estimate that John Bunting was born in 1785. Assuming the original Bunting was 35 years old when he came to Ireland, and allowing 30 years for a generation, then John Bunting is the great grandson of the original Bunting. Thus a tenuous link provided to generation 9 (GGGGGGG parent) where I am generation 1 (i.e. 290 years ago).

-Derek Gerard Bunting

Dad was only a few years off.

My paternal grandfather’s paternal grandfather’s paternal grandmother, my great-great-great-great-grandmother, Allan Bunting’s mother, was Jane O’Laracey (b. Circa 1785, d. after 1861, which Dad had as Jane of Maralin).

According to Dad, Thomas Bowes’ father was another Thomas Bowes, and his wife was Jane Knott. They were married in 1824.

ChatGPT gave me this, but the source doesn’t explicitly say it, I assume it is paywalled but ChatGPT saw a way through:

James Alexander McElwain, born on June 11, 1829, in Mountmellick, County Laois, Ireland, was the son of Cornelius McElwain and Catherine Weaver. He had several siblings, including Edward Henry McElwain, John McElwain, Denis McElwain, and Michael McElwain.

My paternal great-great-great-great-great-grandparents (7 generations before me)

I managed to one-up Dad, thanks to modern technology. I found John Bunting’s mother and father. My paternal grandfather’s paternal grandfather’s paternal grandfather, my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, John Bunting’s father, was Eveas Buntin (b. Circa. 1765 in Moira, County Down, Ireland). Yes, their name was spelled differently.

My paternal grandfather’s paternal grandfather’s paternal grandmother, my great-great-great-great-great-grandmother, John Bunting’s mother and Eveas Bunting’s wife, was Ann Buntin (b. Circa. 1765 in Moira, County Down, Ireland).

Dad states that John Bunting was likely the great-grandson of the original Bunting. This would make Eveas the grandson, and only two more generations above would be the original Bunting when he came to Ireland, assumedly with William of Orange.

My Maternal Family

Despite limited information about my maternal grandfather’s family, I could trace back my maternal family ten whole generations to Thomas Newell born around 1700.

Maternal Grandparents

Grandad, my maternal grandfather, was Ernest Albert (Ernie) Barry, born in Hampstead in London, England, at the Ormond Street Hospital on October 20, 1928. He passed away in December 2003. At the age of six, Grandad moved to Carshalton, Surrey. Grandad went to a Catholic school called The Holy Family where he was taught by nuns.

Grandad has a Wikipedia page and was awarded an Order of the British Empire by the Queen. Originally a plumber, he moved to New Zealand in 1951, a journey that took six weeks by ship.

My maternal grandmother, Eileen Barbara (Barbara) Toomath, was born on February 21, 1933, and passed away on December 31, 2015. She was an amazing baker who especially enjoyed making neenish tarts.

Nana and Grandad got married on May 29, 1953.

My Mother’s Siblings

  • Kenneth (Ken) Barry (b. November 12, 1954, d. 2020)
  • Janet Anne (Annie) Barry (b. September 29, 1956): My godmother. Lives in Christchurch.
  • James Scott (Scott) (elder twin b. February 2, 1963): Lives in Brisbane with aunty Kandice (Kandianne).
  • Uncle Stephen (younger twin b. February 2, 1963): Lives in Bristol, UK, with partner Ann Taylor.

Children of My Mother’s Siblings:

  • Kenneth’s children: Aaron Edward, Rachel Ella, and Nadia Anne.
  • Anne’s children: Justine Anne and Amy Pamela.
  • Scott’s child: James Anthony.
  • Stephen’s children: Nathan John and Callum James.

My Maternal Grandfather’s Family (Grandad, Mum’s Dad)

Grandad’s (Ernest Albert Barry) parents were James Barry and Florence Mary (Flo) (Howard) Barry. According to Grandad’s memoirs, his father had been in the army in Ireland just after the First World War, and was a bricklayer who worked very hard.

James died in the 60s about 56 years old suffering from heart problems.

Florence was born at Folkstone in Kent near Dover in southern England around 1900. Flo had rheumatic fever and a poor heart, but worked very hard. She died at the age of 86.

My aunty Annie used the name Alexander to describe her grandfather, but Grandad’s memoirs have him as James (I could have understood her wrong).

Grandad states in his memoirs that he never could find out much about his own grandparents.

Grandad’s siblings were, in order of age:

  • Richard, bricklayer, later qualified architect who became Chief Clerk of Works for London City
  • Ernest (Grandad)
  • James
  • Victor
  • Michael (although Grandad later says he was born after Anne)
  • Anne, born when Grandad was 14 (which would be 1942-43)

My maternal grandmother’s family (Nana Barbara, Mum’s Mum)

My maternal grandmother, Eileen Barbara (Barbara) Barry (née Toomath), descends from a family that can be reliably traced back to Thomas Newell, born in 1700. This was the furtherest I could reliably go back in my family tree.

My maternal great-grandparents (3 generations before me)

My maternal grandmother’s father, my great-grandfather was Edward Archibald Toomath (b. December 8, 1893, d. 1973, also found here). Edward Archibald fought in both World Wars, and his cenotaph record is available online.

My maternal grandmother’s mother, my great-grandmother, Edward’s wife, was Eileen Norah Toomath (nee Maloney, b. 18 August, 1899, in Thebarton, South Australia, Australia, d. 14 May, 1988 in Lower Hutt, Wellington).

Edward Archibald and Eileen Norah got married in 1924.

My maternal great-great-grandparents (4 generations before me)

My maternal grandmother’s paternal grandfather, my great-great-grandfather, Nana’s paternal grandfather, was William Toomath (b. December 11, 1865 in Greytown, South Wairarapa District, Wellington, New Zealand, d. March 20, 1956 (90) in Lower Hutt, Wellington, New Zealand). He is buried at Bolton Street, Wellington, Wellington, 6011, New Zealand. William’s Cenotaph can be found here.

Mr, and Mrs. Toomath were married at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral, Wellington, on August 13, 1889, by the Rev. John Still (source, there is an Evening Post article about their Golden (50th) Wedding).

My maternal grandmother’s maternal grandfather, my great-great-grandfather, Nana’s maternal grandfather, was Patrick Moloney (note the spelling) (b. 10 October, 1868 in Clare, Ireland, bpt. In Coolycasy, County Clare, Ireland, d. 1931 in Kilbirnie, Wellington, New Zealand).

My maternal grandmother’s maternal grandmother, my great-great-grandmother, Nana’s maternal grandmother, was Bridget Quinn (b. 2 March, 1865 in Omagh, Ireland, d. 1 December, 1957, in Wellington, New Zealand).

My maternal great-great-great-grandparents (5 generations before me)

My maternal grandmother’s paternal grandfather’s father, my great-great-great-grandfather, Nana’s paternal great-grandfather, William Toomath’s father, was Edward Toomath(b. May 22, 1817 in Belleek, Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, d. April 29, 1885 buried in Bolton Street, Wellington, New Zealand). A photo of Edward can be found here. Edward was an early advocate for free education in New Zealand and a member of the Provincial Council.

The Dictionary of NZ Biography has this to say about Edward Toomath:

TOOMATH, EDWARD (1817-1885) was educated at the Battersea training institute, and after a few years soldiering taught in London and Northamptonshire schools. He came to New Zealand in the Cressy (one of the first four ships to Canterbury) as agent of the Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge, and taught in Lyttelton before settling in Wellington. In 1853 he was appointed to the Thorndon school, and in 1857 he founded private schools in Wellington and Greytown. He represented Wellington City in the Provincial Council (1856-61). Toomath was from 1871 to 1881 a member of the Wellington education board. He was an inspector of schools and both in and out of the Council he was one of the earliest advocates of free education. He later had a property at Kairanga, where he bred long-woolled sheep. He married (1850) Eliza Jane Battersby, of Cornwall, and died on 29 Apr 1885.

Find-a-grave has this:

First school teacher in the Canterbury settlement, at Lyttelton; arrived on the ship ‘Cressy'. Later, became inspector of schools in Wellington and a provinicial councillor. His first wife died of cholera, very young, in England. His second wife was Eliza Jane Battersby (d 1898). He died 29 Apr 1885 aged 68; buried in Sydney Street Cemetery

Going off some clippings I have found, Edward may have been a founding member of both The University of Canterbury and Wellington College.

My maternal grandmother’s paternal grandfather’s mother, my great-great-great-grandmother, Nana’s paternal great-grandmother, Edward Toomath’s wife was Eliza Jane Toomath (nee Battersby, b. January 26, 1828, d. December 22, 1898 in Wellington. Eliza was buried at Sydney Street Cemetery, but her gravestone was removed to make way for the Wellington Highway). More information about her grave can be found on the Friends of Bolton Cemetery here, and her information is found on Geni, Find-a-grave, National Library of New Zealand). A photo of Eliza Jane can be found here.

My maternal grandmother’s paternal grandmother’s father, my great-great-great-grandfather, Nana’s great-grandfather, Janet’s father, was Archibald Whiteford (b. December 17, 1838 in Carstairs, Lanarkshire, Scotland (United Kingdom), d. June 7, 1910. Archibald is buried in Karori, Wellington, North Island, New Zealand). Archibald is mentioned prominently in this Evening Post article about William and Janet Toomath’s Golden (50th) Wedding).

My maternal grandmother’s paternal grandmother’s mother, my great-great-great-grandfather, Nana’s great-grandmother, Janet’s mother, was Eliza Ann Whiteford (Evans) (b. May 21, 1849, d. July 16, 1919 in Lower Hutt, also buried in Karori, Wellington, North Island, New Zealand).

My maternal grandmother’s maternal grandfather’s father, my great-great-great-grandfather, Patrick Moloney’s father, was (possibly) Thomas Maloney (b. about 1830 in Ireland. Different last name spelling, and Thomas was also at one stage in Massachusetts, The U.S., although it appears he did move back to Ireland).

My maternal grandmother’s maternal grandfather’s mother, my great-great-great-grandmother, Thomas Maloney’s wife, was Nancy Halloran (also here) (b. about 1835 in Ireland).

My maternal grandmother’s maternal grandmother’s father, my great-great-great-grandfather, Bridget Quinn’s father, was Patrick Quinn (b. 1845 in Ireland).

My maternal grandmother’s maternal grandmother’s mother, my great-great-great-grandmother, Bridget Quinn’s mother, was Ann Quinn (who was possibly Ann Doran, as this person is mentioned as Bridget Quinn’s sister’s mother).

My maternal great-great-great-great-grandparents (6 generations before me)

My maternal grandmother’s paternal grandfather’s paternal grandfather, my great-great-great-great grandfather, Edward Toomath’s father, was James Toomath (estimated birth between 1752 and 1812. Dad had his birth as 1774). Dad had this:

I am supposing / guessing that only James Toomath’s father was Edward and he spelt his name Toomath. James was born 1774, so guess Edward’s birth was 1745/50.

Interestingly, Dad also had:

In 1695, [blank] Toomath married [blank] Hillard.

The spelling is not certain. Toomath was a follower / soldier for William of Orange (Tim: the Bunting name apparently links here too): He was wounded in Ireland, stayed and married [blank] Hillard. Source: Mrs. Markam’s History of Ireland: Richard Toomath, Toronto, Canada: My earliest records of the name Toomath and its variations of the spellings start around 1740s.
