The main characteristic of Kurobushi-yama is its southern face. Directly beneath the summit, there is an almost vertical drop of 300 or so metres about 600m wide meaning anyone can recognise the mountain. The impressive sight is easily recognisable from the nearby ski field, and is something not often seen in the Tohoku region. Locals liken the mountain to an unapproachable soldier, hence the mountain’s name. There are a few climbing routes up the cliff face, making it a popular destination for mountain climbers.

Odaira Kurobushi Trail (3 hours one-way)

The Odaira Kurobushi Trail starts at the northern end of the [Jangle Jungle ski field]. The shortest route to the summit, the trail also offers great views over the peak, and its especially beautiful with the fresh green of spring or during the autumn leaves. Be aware that there are some areas along the trail that become overgrown, and the main ridge to the summit becomes steep in parts.

Shiromori-yama on the other side of the summit has an unbeatable view of the western ridges of the Funagata Renpo, so is worth checking out if you can. Near the Shibakura trailhead there is a part of the river that you have to jump over rocks to get past, which can be dangerous if the river is high. Also, the ridge between Zeni-yama and Shibakura-yama is very thin with a narrow trail. This area is prone to landslides so watch your feet when hiking. There aren’t spots where you can use ropes either, so be careful of slipping.
