A few ways AI could help us learn a second language

Don’t forget to use it!

When it comes to learning a second language, as with basically everything in life, there truly is no substitute for actual practice. Getting out there and actually using the language is the only way you can make any headway. There really is no other option.

In saying that, here are a few ways you could use AI to get in that all important practice (in no particular order):

  • be a speaking partner
  • Be a chat partner
  • give you prompts for things to talk about
  • check your grammar for inaccuracies
  • make your reading material simpler (instead of just translating it)
  • reading out your reading material for listening practice
  • helping you with your pronunciation practice by telling you where you are wrong
  • giving you the etymology of words to help you remember them
  • testing you on certain vocabulary at regular intervals
  • creating example sentences with target vocabulary
  • taking a list of target vocabulary and making material to practice with at your certain word level
  • Letting you know where you stand in terms of vocabulary level and creating learning materials to match

The list goes on, but we must remember that we have to be using the language to make any headway. Do that combined with a few of the techniques here and you’re well on your way to second language proficiency.
