Comfort in the mundane

Tim Bunting Kiwi Yamabushi

You could spend a month in a zen monastery cleaning all day every day. And you know what, it might just make you content. There’s something to be said for the comfort that mundane things give you.

For me, every day begins with about a 20 minute ritual preparing coffee. I realised that of course the coffee is a big part of it, but also all the steps that go into producing the cup of coffee are somewhat relaxing. I love the feel of the grinder as it grinds the beans, and the feel of the kettle in my hand as it slowly pours over the beans that bubble up as carbon dioxide is released.

And that’s about it. In essence that is all you need to do to prepare coffee, and that’s about all you need to enjoy the mundane.
