Consumption versus Production

Last year I had a subscription to Medium. It was good, there were some very good articles and I especially liked the stuff by Tim Denning. I still read it from time to time.

This year, however, I wanted to focus more on production in particular, so instead of medium, I signed up for Ulysses that I am using right now.

Instead of exclusively consuming things, we really ought to produce as well. Everyone has some sort of contribution to give to the world, but if we focus our energy entirely on consumption, it doesn’t exactly help anyone but the producer.

A daily blog is probably what I would first recommend for this, even a free one on Medium. Not only can it help you organise your thoughts in a cohesive way, and therefore give you a greater communication ability, it is also a way to express yourself, which for someone who just consumes, can be a remarkably enlightening experience. You can even do it with an alias, but to really be on the hook, and to really check yourself, you ought to publish things publicly.

Either way, you’ll feel much better about yourself if you produce stuff on the regular. Daily would be my advice, but at least doing something creative that hasn’t been done before.
