Finish with a positive

Some situations in life truly are sad. Unfortunately, even when you try hard not to play the victim, the situation makes it sound like you are the victim, so there’s no way around it. This in turn makes you look like you are ungrateful and a complainer, which people can easily get tired of hearing.

You could argue that those people are just insensitive, sometimes they truly are, but I think we need to try and give them a reason not to be. When I explain something sad, I always try to finish with a positive, either some sort of life lesson or advice garnered from the experience, or some way I’m trying to move forward positively.

This way, the person gets the information you want them to hear, and they aren’t burdened with having to console you. I think this also goes some way in healing as well, to show that you are at least thinking in a positive manner, no matter how trying the situation is.
