No matter how dark it gets

The other night during training we were walking in pitch black, and I only had the faint sight of the legs in front of me to guide me. I knew that if I followed those legs I would be ok, just like you follow the footsteps in snow.

But the thing is, the person at the front doesn't have that luxury, the person at the front has to make their own path no matter how dark it is. You can use a stick or something to check the safety, but that can only get you so far. To truly get to where you're going to, you need to take the steps to get there, no matter how dark it gets.
