The Penny Lane Magnet

Tim Bunting Kiwi Yamabushi

My mother has a Penny Lane magnet that she got from her trip to the UK more than five years ago. It’s an ordinary magnet that you’d find probably in any souvenir shop in England, as it’s a famous symbol of a song by the biggest band the world’s ever seen.

It may not mean much to you, but to the right person it can mean the world.

When I think of this magnet, I am reminded of my mother’s love for the Beatles. I am reminded of the time she came to visit me in Japan, before heading off to the UK. I am reminded of my mother going back to her father’s home country, trying to trace her roots.

Although such a simple item, what this magnet represents is something so complex. Love.
