The Real Meaning of Uketamo: Thoughts, Expectations, Experiences and Emotions

Tim Bunting Kiwi Yamabushi

We use our senses to absorb stimulus from the world. In other words, stimulus passes through to our brains through our senses. But as much as possible we need to take these senses for what they are, rather than allowing our brains to interfere. We need to take these initial senses for what they are. We shouldn’t put our own thoughts, our own expectations, our own experiences, nor our own emotions into these senses. That is what Master Hoshino means when he says that our brains are getting in the way.

If we live how we sense, things will go well. It is our thoughts, our expectations, our experiences, and our emotions that affect the stimulus the world is trying to give us.

Sensing without thoughts, expectations, experiences, nor emotions is Uketamo.
