They can keep it to themselves

When someone overreacts, it doesn’t mean you have to. Keep your emotions at bay, and let them have their moment. No need to let it rub off on you.

Japanese people are generally very good at doing this, at letting the overreactor have their moment in the sun, and (trying to at least) giving them the chance to see their overreaction for what it is, not adding fuel to the fire.
