In The Driver’s Seat

Where you should be

In the 2023 Super Rugby final, Damien McKenzie had a chance to put his Chiefs in front with less than ten minutes on the clock. If he had made the penalty, the pressure on the Crusaders may have been enough to stop them from scoring what were the winning points of the game.

Alas, for Chiefs’ fans at least, it was not meant to be and the Crusaders deservedly won their seventh Super Rugby title in a row.

Anyone who says they could make that kick is dreaming. Anyone who says they could be the one able to give it a little more oomph, and a little bit more of an angle, well, they ought to be in the driver’s seat.

McKenzie’s not going to practice that exact kick excessively from now on. Although it could have won them the game, practicing that kick alone wouldn’t have gotten them into that position in the first place.

He’s going to go back to basics. He’s going to go back to bread and butter, the passing, the tackling, the kicking, the running, all the stuff that got him into the driver’s seat in the first place.

And that’s what he did in the build up too.

When you’re in the driver’s seat, worry about what’s in front of you. What’s behind you doesn’t exist anymore. What’s on the horizon doesn’t exist either. Focus on what you can do in the moment, and give it your best.

Because what else is there?
