Taking advantage of spur of the moment chances: Lessons From Mt. Yonetaihei

Mt. Chokai

To be really able to take advantage of spur of the moment chances, you really do need to do your homework. Repetitive practice is so crucial so that you can nail the chance when it comes. Likewise it is also important to take steps to set up these opportunities to arise in the first place.

I worked out what the problem was yesterday climbing Mt. Yonetaihei. Although I don't think I can be completely to blame, if I had done just a little bit more research beforehand and changed the direction I went around the mountain, things would have turned out differently. I think it's just bad luck and bad timing that the path wasn't visible, but it also means that no one else reached the summit yesterday.

I was a little bit rash in going there, it was the first free day in a long time that I had where the sun was actually shining, and although I had done a bit of preparation beforehand, I guess that preparation wasn't enough. This is to say that in future when I do this preparation, I need to make sure I do a thorough job so that when the chance arises, I am able to take it with an educated response. That didn't happen yesterday, and with things like mountains, this can be very risky, so I need to think a bit more before I act next time.
