Failing to plan

Similar to yesterday’s post about doing things right the first time, collecting footage for videos also requires careful planning. There’s only so much editing can change, and you can really feel that if you don’t get good enough footage the first time around.

What this means is that you have to have somewhat of a plan in mind before you start collecting footage. You have to have some idea of the shots you need, and also an idea of your limitations so you know what is and isn’t possible.

It takes foresight to do this, but you should also account for spontaneous inspiration when doing things that are creative. In other words, have a bare minimum of footage that you need, get that, and be on the look out for other ideas.
