YAMAGATA KAMURO-DAKE
Peak resembling a Samurai helmet along the border of Miyagi Prefecture with spectacular 360° views.
Yamagata Kamuro-dake (not Kamuro-dake or Kamuro-san in Mogami) is the fraternal peak to Sendai Kamuro lying directly to the east. The name comes from the fact that the mountain resembles a Sengoku Period (1467-1615) Samurai helmet. However, this description seems more apt for nearby Sendai Kamuro. Yamagata Kamuro-dake is said to have more of a graceful feminine appearance. Only the top of Yamagata Kamuro-dake is visible from the Yamagata Basain. To be able to see its graceful feminine appearance, you'll probably have to squint your eyes.
A little below the summit and to the west of Yamagata Kamuro-dake there is a great lookout. In early summer you can see past Yamagata City all the way to the Asahi Renpo (mountains) or a snow-capped Gassan. To the north lies the ridge between Omoshiro-yama and Gosho-zan. To the south, the ridge connecting to the Zao Renpo. Each of these are real sights to behold and show the endless nature of the Ou Mountains.
Take the exit heading towards Sasaya Toge from the Sekizawa Interchange and park your car. After walking up the road for a little while, there will be a sign to the Sasaya Toge (the former route). Enter the mountain from here. Along the way there are two places where the bush gets very thick to be weary of. About an hour in you will reach the Sasaya Toge.
Enter the mountain again after passing through the Sasaya Toge car park, taking an immediate left to the open area where a zigzag path takes you uphill. The further you climb, the better the view.
After ascending Hamaguri-yama, there is a flower field. From here if you look to the east you can see Sendai-Kamuro and its distinctive Samurai helmet shape. Before long, Tongari-yama will appear in front of you, and there are steep sections with rocks to climb. This last ridge from Tongari-yama to Yamagata-Kamuro is very gradual, and is a famous spot for autumn leaves.
The trail from Sasaya Toge is a 1 hour 45 minute hike. There is also a trail from the Takazawa hamlet in Takase on the Yamagata side, but this trail requires fording a river so is more for experienced hikers.
