Yamagata: You should probably just go there

North Japan’s North Japan

Tohoku has a huge PR problem. This is probably why you haven’t heard of it, but this part of Japan is really bad at promoting itself. Something about modesty and shyness I guess.

What are you looking for in a Japan trip? Experiencing the culture, eating the finest foods, maybe a relaxing soak in a hot spring, or getting in touch with the history of the place?

Tohoku, and Yamagata prefecture in particular, has all the best aspects of Japan in one. Well, everything but the neon lights and huge cities. But who wants that anyway?

Culture?

Check.

History?

Check.

Food?

Check.

Hot springs? Mountains of snow? The ocean?

Check, check, check.

Plus we have some things that many other parts of Japan don’t. Yamabushi training, a certified creative city of Gastronomy, or four Japan heritage sites much?

Save yourself the trouble of planning a trip all over Japan. Just come to Yamagata Prefecture.
